Meet Leigh

Leigh Wambsganss (womz-gonz) is running for State Senate to keep Texas strong and free, and fight for real affordability that lower taxes and commonsense policies bring. She is a mom, a business owner, a seasoned professional, and a volunteer with over 30 years of experience advocating for Texas families. Leigh knows what it’s like to struggle, to sacrifice, to not be sure the money will stretch to the end of the month, and to work hard for every opportunity. She didn’t inherit her success. She earned it.

Born into a working-class family, Leigh’s dad was a truck driver and a police officer before joining the Army and ultimately retiring from a tire manufacturing plant. Leigh’s mom worked in a children’s home and then in an insurance office. When her parents’ marriage ended, Leigh and her mom figured out how to make it work with just the two of them.

While still in high school, Leigh worked to buy the groceries while her single mom covered the rent and utilities. There was no safety net, no shortcuts, just the daily work of showing up for each other, working hard, and leaning on their faith to carry them through.

Leigh worked to pay her way through school, becoming the first person in her family to earn a college degree. She obtained her bachelor’s degree and later her master’s degree, also while working full-time. Proof that hard work and determination can open doors no one in her family had walked through before.

Educated in K-12 public schools, Leigh knows firsthand why strong schools and good jobs matter. She’s committed to supporting the funding needed to improve public education. As a mom, she wants every Texas student to have real paths forward, whether in college, career training, apprenticeships, or the military.

Obtaining her educational goals shaped everything that came next: a career in television news, working on congressional campaigns, serving veterans as a congressional liaison, a corporate communications executive, and building her own real estate business while raising her family.

Through all those years, Leigh never forgot where she came from. Her experiences gave her an authentic, personal understanding of what it means to struggle, and that understanding fuels her heart to help those still struggling to get by. She’s led efforts to bring food and shelter to families in need, served in a crisis pregnancy ministry, and today still serves on a board that feeds thousands of people every month right here in Tarrant County.

For over 30 years, Leigh has been a tireless volunteer fighting for common sense policies that make Texas special. Whether testifying in Austin, at the county or local levels, Leigh has earned respect from lawmakers. She has worked for lower taxes, local control of our own communities, law and order, protecting constitutional rights, and has been a strong voice in protecting women and girls in sports, locker rooms, detention centers, and domestic violence shelters.

Leigh has decades of proven experience fearlessly fighting for what’s right. That’s the kind of common-sense, hard-working, grounded leadership that Texas Senate District 9 needs in Austin.

Leigh is a Christian, wife, mother, and dog lover. She and her husband, Andy, have lived in Tarrant County over thirty years and have two grown sons. The Wambsganss family worships at The Met Church in Fort Worth.
